Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a developmental difference that shapes how a child communicates, learns, and interacts with the world. Some enjoy social interaction, while others prefer quiet, independent play. Understanding your child’s individual way of communicating is key.

At our school, we believe neurodiversity makes our community richer. Autistic students are unique and bring creativity, honesty, deep focus, and fresh ways of thinking to our classrooms.

Myths vs. Facts

Myths

  • Autism is caused by bad parenting
  • Autistic children don’t have feelings
  • All autistic children are geniuses
  • Children will "grow out of it". Autism is lifelong. With support, skills grow and life gets better

Facts

  • Autism is genetic/neurological. No parent causes it
  • They feel deeply, but may express it differently
  • Some have high IQs; others have intellectual disability. It’s a spectrum

How Can Parents Support Them At Home?

Here are some practical ways to help:

1. Build Communication
Use simple language, visual aids, gestures, or picture systems to support understanding.

2. Create Routine
Consistent daily routines help children feel safe and reduce anxiety.

3. Encourage Play and Interaction
Engage in activities your child enjoys and gently expand their interaction skills.

4. Celebrate Small Wins
Progress may be gradual—every step forward matters.

Early support matters to help children build communication, social, and daily living skills. This may include:

  • Speech and language support
  • Occupational therapy
  • Behavioral therapy
  • Structured teaching approaches
  • Play-based learning

Final Message to Parents

Raising a child with autism may come with questions and challenges, but it also brings moments of joy, discovery, and pride. With understanding, support, and collaboration, your child can thrive and reach their full potential.
